The story is set in the year 2126, where a Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (DMMORPG) called YGGDRASIL is about to shut down after a successful twelve-year run. The protagonist, Momonga, is the leader of a powerful guild called Ainz Ooal Gown. When the game servers shut down, Momonga finds himself trapped in the game world, now transformed into his skeletal Lich avatar, unable to log out or use normal player functions. As he explores this new reality, Momonga adopts the name Ainz Ooal Gown and sets out to discover if there are other players like him in this world. He also aims to ensure the safety of his guild’s headquarters, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, and its NPCs, who have now become sentient beings. The series blends elements of dark fantasy and isekai genres, featuring themes of power, loyalty, and the exploration of a new world. It has been adapted into a manga and an anime series, with the anime having four seasons so far.
